Verona
Starting off strong with Italy’s city of love, made famous by Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’.
Whilst there, you can take a trip to Casa Di Giulietta (Juliet’s house) and visit the balcony where Juliet is said to have waited for Romeo.
In the courtyard of Juliet’s house is the ‘Love Wall’, where visitors can leave their own romantic messages by either writing directly on the wall or sticking a note to it.
Finally, you can visit ‘The Juliet Club’, which isn’t a famous spot from Romeo & Juliet but rather the film ‘Letters to Juliet’. Here, volunteers known as the ‘Secretaries of Juliet’ spend their days responding to people from all over the world who have written a letter to Juliet.
Skopelos
Live out the ‘Mamma Mia’ summer romance of your dreams on the Greek island of Skopelos…
Slightly bigger than fellow islands Mykonos and Santorini, but arguably less touristy, the island of Skopelos, with its little cobbled streets and breath-taking views of the Aegean Sea, is an ideal location for those looking for a romantic getaway.
The church of Agios Ioannis Kastri, a stunning backdrop for various scenes in the film, is now well known as the ‘Mamma Mia church’.
Paphos
What could be more romantic than visiting the birthplace of the Goddess of Love?
Petra tou Romiou, a sea stack located in Paphos, Cyprus, is known as ‘Aphrodite’s Rock’, as a result of the myth that Aphrodite herself emerged from the sea foam here. For that reason, Aphrodite’s Rock is named as such because of the foam that forms around the bottom.
There are various local legends surrounding the rock, one of which states that those who swim around it will be blessed with eternal beauty, and another where you will find true love if you swim around the rock three times.
Paris
We couldn’t write about romantic destinations without including France’s ville de l’amour (city of love)…
With beautiful landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Notre Dame Cathedral, there’s no wonder why Paris is one of the most popular places for those planning to pop the question or heading off on their honeymoon.
Pay a visit to the ‘Love Lock Bridge’ whilst you’re there. Although you can’t add your own lovelock to the bridge anymore – due to the collective weight of the locks causing structural damage – it’s still a romantic spot to visit.
If you’re looking for a lesser known spot to share a lover’s kiss, pay a visit to the ‘Temple of Love’, located on an island in Versailles, where it’s said that sharing a kiss in the centre of the temple will strengthen your love and relationship. It’s said that Marie-Antoinette ordered the temple to be built as a celebration of love between the queen and the king.
So, whether you’re looking to relax on the beach or explore a city’s cobbled streets, there’s always a little romance wherever you go.
