October can only mean one thing… Halloween is creeping around the corner and what better way to celebrate than with a ghostly getaway?

PS. We’ve got our hands on a spooktacular discount for you too.

1) Dracula’s castle
Possibly one of the eeriest destinations on our list – and not one to be missed, is Transylvania, Romania.
Once upon a time, Transylvania was home to Vlad the Impaler – a sadistic leader who later inspired Bram Stoker’s vampire myth ‘Count Dracula’.
Bran Castle, commonly known as ‘Dracula’s Castle’, is one of the most sought-after European destinations for tourists looking for a scary escape during Halloween.
Home to popular Halloween tours, shows and parties, you should add this one to your bucket list if you’re looking for an activity you can really stick your teeth into.
What’s more, the year 2022 marks 125 years since the Dracula legend came about, so there are lots of festivities taking place this year. The festivities are usually pretty similar every year, but if you’re feeling inspired to go on a very last minute holiday this year, why not consider:
Bloodlines: Dublin to Transylvania - The making of Bram Stoker’s Dracula Exhibition
Available until 12th November 2022 at Bran Castle.
Bran Castle Halloween party
Including a guided tour, traditional Transylvanian dinner and overnight accommodation in Bran Castle. Plus, dress to impress at the ultimate costume party.
2) The Catacombs of Paris
The Catacombs of Paris is second on our list of places to visit during Halloween.
After cemeteries reached their limit in the 18th century, Parisians converted former quarries into one of the largest graves in the world. As such, the Catacombs of Paris were formed in the 19th century and now attracts more than 500,000 visitors a year.
The total length is approximately 300 kilometres. But, around 2 kilometres is open to the public for short guided tours where you can walk through the underground tunnels of the southern part of the city.
It’s a must-see when in Paris.
3) London
If you don’t want to travel far, but would still like to immerse yourself in a Halloween activity closer to home – why not take a trip to London for one of the many activities the city has to offer.
The Tower of London
Visit the Tower of London for an unforgettable, family-friendly activity where you can wander the tower grounds as if you’re a prisoner spending your final days within ancient walls.
This Halloween activity will leave you in a realm of mystery, feeling closer to the spirit world than ever before. It’s thrilling – but not too scary, so it’s one that the whole family can enjoy.
Jack the Ripper tour
Take the unnerving journey through the East End of London, reliving the horrors of one of the most notorious killers of all time – Jack the Ripper.
During the tour, you’ll visit the backstreet sites where the murders of the ‘Canonical Five’ took place in 1888. The horror stories will be brought to life with state-of-the-art ‘Ripper Vision’ casting projections and moving images across the walls. Your journey will end at the medical museum, where you can learn more about the murders of his victims.
The tour is open all year round, but it seems like a fitting activity for Halloween – right?
Fright Night at Thorpe Park
This year, Thorpe Park is celebrating Fright Night’s 21st birthday. If you’ve been before, you’ll know what a terrifying experience it can be. So, should you be chasing an adrenaline rush, this is the one for you.
We all know that rollercoasters are scary enough during daylight, so you can imagine the torment of experiencing them in the dark, alongside live actors, scare mazes and more.
With lots of packages available, from entry on its own to an overnight stay with a 2-day entry, you’ll find something to suit you and your friend group’s needs.
4) Poveglia Island
Italy has to be one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. So, you might be surprised to know it’s home to one of the most haunted islands ever to exist – Poveglia Island.
Otherwise known as ‘Plague Island’ or ‘Quarantined Island’, Poveglia Island is short of residents because it’s incredibly sinister and haunted.
Not to worry though, located just a short boat ride away from Venice, you can relax after your trip with a bowl of pasta and beautiful views of the canals and gondolas in the floating city.
5) The Harz Witch’s Trail
If you’re into hiking and beer then you should consider a trip to Germany. Not only can you revel in the Oktoberfest celebrations, but you can enjoy a trek down the Harz Witches Trail too!
This ‘supernatural’ trail is one of Germany’s popular long-distance walking paths. It’s almost 100km long and can be trekked within a week if you’re up for it.
Its name comes after the death of 133 witches in the 1500s, making it a must-have experience for Halloween. In modern times, the region is known for its witch stories, various legends and fairy tales - which, when you look at the glorious landscapes, you’ll understand why.
For the ultimate fairy tale experience, why not stay overnight in the beautiful medieval town of ‘Quedlinberg’ lined with half-timbered houses overlooking the Quedlinberg Castle.
Plus, there’s more where that came from!
From the Haunted Castle and Jail in North Wales, to the Greyfriars Kirkland’s haunted graveyard in Edinburgh – Europe is full of creepy spots!
In it for the long ghoul?
Why not consider the Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico or crawl through the Cu Chi Tunnels in Vietnam… if you dare!
